Technology and Ministry
As more and more tools come available to us that can help us to spread the Gospel, I will be posting resources, guidelines, etc. (Notice: research findings are linked on the "Recent Research" page listed on "For Coordinators of Youth Ministry Start Page" which includes results regarding teens usage of technologies.)
On the diocesan website (www.doy.org) you may have already seen these pieces:
Parish ministers working with minors who wish to promote events and share information via social media, cell phones and other modern technologies should have parents complete and return for your files the
"Permission for Direct Contact with Minors" form.

NFCYM Internal Social Media Policies
Though these policies govern NFCYM staff, they could be a resource for diocesan leadership. The proliferation of social applications on the web has been rapid. These policies establish boundaries for our use of Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, and any other site or application that allows staff to interact with a community via an electronic device. We are also developing external policies for the NFCYM. Download the document here: /uploads/1/1/0/5/11055607/internal_social_media_guidelines_for_the_nfcym_1.docx

Teens explain how they really use Snapchat and Instagram, and why Facebook still matters
2/28/17
"More than half of millennials (ages 20 to 36, according to Pew) are considered to be above average when it comes to new technology, according to an Experian study. But, it seems being an "early adopter" isn't as important to Gen Z (under 20). Most of the survey takers said they preferred apps that their friends were already on rather than being the first to discover something."

Pope Francis included references to use of our websites and social media in his June 1, 2014 address for World Communications Day.
Here are a few select quotes:
> The internet, in particular, offers immense possibilities for encounter and solidarity. This is something truly good, a gift from God. (Paragraph 2)
> By means of the internet, the Christian message can reach “to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
> Communication is a means of expressing the missionary vocation of the entire Church; today the social networks are one way to experience this call to discover the beauty of faith, the beauty of encountering Christ.
> Let us boldly become citizens of the digital world. The Church needs to be concerned for, and present in, the world of communication, in order to dialogue with people today and to help them encounter Christ.

If you are considering using Facebook (or even similar social media networks), this article gives a couple good questions to consider regarding setting up and posting to that account:

Be sure to also click on the "Recent Research"

what teens are using, how they are using technology, etc.
As this seems to change quickly, there are continual studies
and surveys being done for marketing that can also help us
in our outreach to youth in sharing the Gospel!
