Letter from the Synod Fathers to Young People
We the Synod Fathers now address you, young people of the world, with a word of hope, trust and consolation. In these days, we have gathered together to hear the voice of Jesus, “the eternally young Christ”, and to recognize in Him your many voices, your shouts of exultation, your cries, and your moments of silence.
We are familiar with your inner searching, the joys and hopes, the pain and anguish that make up your longings. Now we want you to hear a word from us: we wish to be sharers in your joy, so that your expectations may come to life. We are certain that with your enthusiasm for life, you will be ready to get involved so that your dreams may be realized and take shape in your history.
Our weaknesses should not deter you; our frailties and sins must not be an obstacle for your trust. The Church is your mother; she does not abandon you; she is ready to accompany you on new roads, on higher paths where the winds of the Spirit blow stronger – sweeping away the mists of indifference, superficiality and discouragement.
When the world that God so loved, that he gave us his only Son, Jesus, is focused on material things, on short-term successes, on pleasures, and when the world crushes the weakest, you must help it to rise up again and to turn its gaze towards love, beauty, truth and justice once more.
For a month, we have walked together with some of you and with many others who have been united to us through prayer and affection. We wish to continue the journey now in every part of the earth where the Lord Jesus sends us as missionary disciples.
The Church and the world urgently need your enthusiasm. Be sure to make the most fragile people, the poor and those wounded by life your traveling companions.
You are the present; be a brighter future.

Synopsis, October 2018
Since October 3, the bishops of the Church, along with 49 worldwide auditors, have been seriously discerning how the Church can best serve young people as they experience the faith and discern God’s plan for their lives.
This process started in January of 2017 when Pope Francis released the Synod Preparatory Document and his Letter to Young People. In June 2017, the Vatican released a special website and survey directed at youth and young adults. In March 2018, the Pre-Synod Working Document was released and in June 2018 the Instrumentum Laboris, or Working Document for the Synod was released.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS:
JULY 24, 2018
Pope Francis has ratified the members elected by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to represent the United States at the upcoming XV Ordinary General Assembly: Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment. The Synod will take place October 3-28. The USCCB announced the names of those elected on July 23, 2018.The delegates are:
· Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
· Archbishop José H. Gomez, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Vice President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
· Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth

· Auxiliary Bishop Robert E. Barron, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis
The XV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops has been convened by the Holy Father, Pope Francis, along with the Vatican Synod Office. In preparation for this Synod, the USCCB and other episcopal conferences, as well as ecclesial movements, associations, and experts in the field, were consulted throughout 2017 on the topic of “young people, the faith, and vocational discernment.” In addition, the Vatican collected responses from an online questionnaire aimed at youth and young adults conducted last year. In March 2018, over 300 young adult delegates gathered in Rome, where Pope Francis convened a pre-synod gathering to listen directly to the voice of young people from around the world. The gathering produced a Final Pre-Synodal document.
The Working Document. . . (“Instrumentum Laboris”) for the October Synod was released in late June 2018 and includes a summary of all the Synod consultations to date. It describes the purpose of the 2018 Synod of Bishops as an opportunity for the Church “to accompany all young people, without exception, towards the joy of love,” realizing that “taking care of young people is not an optional task for the Church, but an integral part of her vocation and mission is history.”

In October 2018, Catholic bishops from all over the world will meet in Rome for a synod focusing on “Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment.” The goal of the synod is to develop a pastoral guide on how the Church encounters young adults (primarily ages 16 - 29) and how it can better help those young people to encounter Jesus. An article on this Vatican survey is posted at: www.ncronline.org/news/vatican/vatican-releases-online-questionnaire-youth ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Diocese of Youngstown invited input from high school teens (Catholic and non-Catholic), young adults (19 - 30s, both Catholic and non-Catholic), their parents/family members, as well as parish/school staff and leadership from May 18 - August 15, 2017. THANK YOU TO ALL who participated. Please pray for us as we review the input! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ A copy of the Preparatory Document has been shared with each of the 6 Catholic High Schools and with the parishes in the Diocese of Youngstown. It can also be viewed online at: www.vatican.va/roman_curia/synod/documents/rc_synod_doc_20170113_documento-preparatorio-xv_en.html Throughout the year, the OY&YAM will publish findings from our surveys on the Office Blog page: (See in menu above, or click link below) youngstownoyyam.weebly.com/office-blog |
News Release regarding Youngstown Surveys:
Teens, young adults and parents invited to tell the Catholic Church their thoughts!

On January 13, 2017, Pope Francis wrote to young people: “I am pleased to announce that in October 2018 a Synod of Bishops will take place to treat the topic: “Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment.” I wanted you to be the center of attention, because you are my heart.” He continued, “The Church also wishes to listen to your voice, your sensitivities and your faith; even your doubts and your criticism. Make your voice heard.”
The Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J. wants the Diocese of Youngstown to be part of this time of listening and asked our parishes and Catholic high schools to reach out and invite high school ages teens, young adults (ages 19 – 30s), their parents and family members as well as Church leaders to participate by completing Synod Surveys. “I want us to be part of forming the documentation for the preparation for the Synod,” said Bishop Murry.
Cindee Case, Director of the diocesan Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, crafted seven different surveys to help capture the input needed for a diocesan report to be submitted to the Unites States Conference of Catholic Bishops who will in turn write a report to the Vatican that will be used for conversations at the Synod.
The surveys are for:
1. Catholic high school aged teens
2. Non-Catholic high school aged teens
3. Catholic Young Adults (ages 19 – 30s)
4. Non-Catholic Young Adults (ages 19 – 30s)
5. Parents/family members of teens and young adults in English
6. Parents/family members of teens and young adults in Spanish
7. Parish staff and leadership in Catholic institutions
Case stated, “If you fit one of these categories, your input is crucial in helping the Church gain a better understanding of the lives of young people and their views on faith, religion and vocational call. This is a unique opportunity to share with the bishops and pope what we think, feel and experience in our Catholic Church. I am excited that the input from these surveys will help inform our efforts at the diocesan, national and global levels of the Church!”
Over 150 surveys had been completed by June 15, added Case. A few parishes will be hosting Town Hall style meetings to discuss ways that the Church is and is not connecting with young people. Most parishes and Catholic High schools will be sharing the link to the surveys. Check your local parish bulletin and website for further information.
Initially, the deadline for all input was July 31, but Bishop Murry wished to extend that to August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, in order to encourage even more participation.
