What is the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry?
Mission (through June 2021): TO SUPPORT/TRAIN/RESOURCE ADULTS WHO ACCOMPANY YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT CATHOLICS AS THEY ENCOUNTER JESUS
Guided by the United States Bishop’s documents Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry (1997) and Sons and Daughters of the Light: A Pastoral Plan for Ministry with Young Adults (1997), The Diocese of Youngstown Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry (OY&YAM) exists to serve as a resource for faith communities in the diocese in providing comprehensive outreach to high school teens and to young adults. The OY&YAM assists with the recognition of the ‘Church of Tomorrow’ within the ‘Church of Today.’
Advocacy/Collaboration
Support
To provide opportunities for networking, programming, collaborating and consulting to support youth ministry in parishes, schools and deaneries.
Formation
To promote and enhance formational opportunities to better address the needs of the diocese.
Youth Ministry and Young Adult Consultation Services
The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry is able to provide consultation to individual parishes,
deaneries and other groupings by offering:
• Assistance, training and resources to help parishes plan for and implement youth ministry and/or young adult ministries
• Consultation for coordinators in special situations
• Consultation for parishes in developing adolescent catechesis
• Consultation for parishes in developing retreats and other specialized elements of youth and young adult ministries
• On-site assistance for parishes seeking to implement various aspects of youth or young adult ministry ƒ
• Consultation for parishes to assist in selecting a coordinator of youth ministry or a young adult ministry coordinator (possibly as part of an Adult Faith Formation position) with the Office of Religious Education.

- To advocate for and promote a vision for comprehensive ministry to high school age youth with a strong emphasis on catechesis and evangelization, throughout all parish, school, deanery, diocesan and community structures.

- Annual Eagle of the Cross Award Liturgy and Banquet
- Periodic Training seminars and classes on youth ministry topics

- Connections to state, regional, national and international events for youth and

Regarding young adult ministries, The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry offers:
- Parish/deanery consultations on young adult ministry
- Presentations on young adult issues and ministry
- Workshops at diocesan conferences upon request
- Support for parish/deanery programs for young adults
- Facebook group for young adults (“DOY-YAM”) with resources, event information and connections for YA’s
- YAM e-updates (electronic news for young adults)
- Connections to state, regional, national and international events for young adults and those who minister with them, such as:

On-going OY&YAM Programs:
- Diocesan Youth Convention (DYC): Biennial day of learning, prayers, service and celebration for highs school teens featuring a keynote presentation, workshop break-outs, hands-on learning exhibits, and celebration of the Mass (typically with our bishop.) Usually the 1st Sunday of November, in even-numbered years.
- Diocesan Delegation to the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) – Alternating with the DYC, we arrange travel, accommodations and registration for all parish and school participants, including preparation sessions. Groups organize in the Spring for the fall conference (often the week before Thanksgiving.).
- Eagle of the Cross Awards Program: Up to 30 high school juniors and seniors are selected from written nominations to receive this award from the diocese. Recipients are invited to a Mass and banquet at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Shrine in Youngstown. Nominations due each February.
- New Parish Ministers Orientation Series Co-sponsored and administered with the Office of Religious Education to help newer parish ministers become aware of policies, paperwork and guidelines of the diocese as well as to offer support and assistance.
- Youth Ministers Gatherings: Periodic meetings to share resources and ideas among adult serving in youth ministries.
- Young Adult Ministry Calendar and electronic publicity support is offered for parishes/deaneries and Catholic agencies offering programs of interest to those in their 20s and 30s.
- Youth Ministry Trainings: A variety of options are offered each year such as the Youth Ministry Specialization Courses Online Training and gathered, in-person workshops and seminars at diocesan events and stand-alone trainings.
