Coming to DYC'18?
Let's get ready!
Here are a few tips to prepare for our day together with Jesse Manibusan and Bishop George V. Murry, S.J.
at St. Michael the Archangel on Sunday, November 4th:
1. Become familiar with some of Jesse's music.
A few songs have been linked to the concert page:
youngstownoyyam.weebly.com/jesse-manibusan-concert.html
2. Become familiar with some of the prayer styles being utilized at DYC'18.
See below for a few hints on a good Confession, in case you want to take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation that will be offered during the dinner break at DYC'18.
Also, see below for some background information on the time of Adoration of our Lord that will take place with a short Eucharistic Procession. As part of the prayer, we will sing 2 traditional chants that you may not have heard (often), so a version of that is linked below as well.
3. Pray that it will be a good experience for you to grow closer to God and others in our Church,
but also pray for all the speakers, volunteers, chaperones and your fellow teens that it will
also be a good experience for each of them!
4. Make sure you know about how and when you are heading to DYC'18, and how and when you will be getting home,
so that you can plan your time (and homework) accordingly.
5. Turn your clocks BACK one hour on Saturday, November 3rd before you go to bed so you can get the extra hour of sleep and can go to DYC'18 with a lot of energy to enjoy the day!

What is adoration? For anyone not familiar with Eucharistic adoration we offer the following information adapted from the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry program for the NCYC 2017. What is adoration? Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is a form of prayer that began centuries ago. The same Eucharist that we receive at Mass is who we worship in adoration. A consecrated host is displayed in a scared vessel called a monstrance. The word "monstrance" means "to show". The monstrance allows Christ's body to be seen so that we can be present to God as he is present to us. What is going on during adoration? The Eucharist will be in a monstrance and accompanied by candles and incense. During the time of adoration there will be prayers, music and periods of silence, all of which will help us to focus on the presence of God before us in the Eucharist. What do I do during adoration? During the time of initial exposition and repose, as a sign of respect you may kneel. At other times assume a position that will allow you to pray and to listen, this is your time to bring before God all your hopes, concerns and joys. While it may be tempting to talk to the person next to you please refrain from doing so to allow everyone the opportunity to encounter God in a profound way. What if I get distracted? It happens. Bring yourself back to the moment and remind yourself why you are there. Find a position that will minimize distractions and offer to God all the things that are on your mind. Listen. |

Helpful Steps for a Good Confession:
1. Examination of Conscience
An examination of conscience is the act of looking prayerfully into our hearts to ask how we have hurt
our relationship with God and other people through our thoughts, words, and actions.
Take some time to reflect on your recent attitudes, actions and choices. What sins are you aware of committing?
In what ways do you feel like you need to improve your relationship with God?
In what ways do you feel that you have failed to be a loving person to your family, friends, classmates,
neighbors, strangers, and people on social media?
To read an Examination based on the Ten Commandments, visit: http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/sacraments-and-sacramentals/penance/upload/Examination-of-Conscience.pdf
2. When a priest is available to pray with you, quietly approach him, take a seat across from him
(“face-to-face”) and make the Sign of the Cross.
3. Say "Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been (state how long) since my last confession.
These are my sins." Then tell your sins simply and honestly to the priest. Y
ou might even want to discuss the circumstances and the root causes of your sins
and ask the priest for advice or direction.
4. Listen to the advice the priest gives you and accept the penance from him.
Then make an Act of Contrition for your sins.
AN ACT OF CONTRITION
Oh my God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against you
whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance,
to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In His name, my God, have mercy. Amen.
5. The priest MIGHT dismiss you with the words of praise: "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good.
You respond: "For His mercy endures forever."
The priest will then conclude with: "The Lord has freed you from your sins. Go in peace."
And you respond by saying: "Thanks be to God."
6. Leave the priest. Reflect on your penance and pray for the strength to avoid repeating the sins you confessed.
There is a bench outside the gym for brief quiet prayer, as desired.
Then celebrate being forgiven and deepening your relationship with God!
