Do I Listen to What I hear?I refused to listen to Christmas/holiday music on the radio until after Thanksgiving (which actually becomes more difficult each year, but I got a free trial of Sirius XM Radio which helped me this year), in any event, I have been listening to it throughout December, and last night, as I heard the song, "Do You Hear What I Hear" for what might be the millionth time in my life, I found myself listening to it a little differently.... instead of absent-mindedly singling along, I just listened.... I recalled in my childhood loving this song and reflecting on how the news of Jesus' birth moved "up" along in power from the wind to the lamb to the shepherd to the king to all people.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here are the lyrics, in case you need reminded: Said the night wind to the little lamb: "Do you see what I see? Way up in the sky, little lamb Do you see what I see? A star, a star, dancing in the night With a tail as big as a kite With a tail as big as a kite" Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy: "Do you hear what I hear? Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy Do you hear what I hear? A song, a song, high above the trees With a voice as big as the sea With a voice as big as the sea" Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king: "Do you know what I know? In your palace warm, mighty king Do you know what I know? A Child, a Child shivers in the cold Let us bring Him silver and gold Let us bring Him silver and gold" Said the king to the people everywhere: "Listen to what I say! Pray for peace, people everywhere! Listen to what I say! The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night He will bring us goodness and light He will bring us goodness and light" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sometimes the Holy Spirit speaks to us in small ways, like the wind.... and sometimes we need a priest, bishop or the Pope to tell us something to help reveal some aspect of God's love to learn of it. This Christmas, consider how is God revealing Godself to you in a new way? Perhaps in a star, a gift you give, a homily or a song (with a voice as big as a sea!)…. Regardless of the way you hear the Holy Spirit, I pray that you will be open to listening, and then be open to sharing God's goodness and light with all those around you, which is how Christmas is really celebrated, right? Do you hear what I hear? Bing Crosby version, with an Introduction by Linus and Charlie Brown for Good Measure!
